Seperating mixtures:
Today in class we learned about different ways to seperate a mixture. There are 4 ways to do this:
-by hand (eg: picking out zinc from salt?)
-filtration (eg: filtered water)
-distillation (eg: seperating oil from sand to make the oil useable)
-crystillization (eg: putting a string in a glass of water with sugar)
-chromatography
If you seperate mixtures by hand and by filtration these two are heterogeneous mixtures only. All of the above are physical changes.
Atoms:
We reviewed about atoms. Positive ions are cations and negative ions are anions.
Elemental information (some exceptions are):
- copper -> cuprum
- gold -> aurum
- ion -> ferrum
- lead -> plumbum
- silver -> argentum
NOTE: For chemical formulas, be aware of the ifferences between ions and compound formulas!
