Tuesday, November 10, 2009 @ Percentage mass of elements in compounds
Today we learnt how to find the percentage mass of elements in compounds.

Molar mass = g/mol
Molar volume = L/mol

Ex: 0.540 mol of gas occupies a volume of 0.798 mL. Calculate the molar volume.

molar volume = 0.798 L/ 0.540 mol = 1.47 L/mol

Ex: Find the % carbon by mas in Ethane (C2H2)
OsH6
2(12) + 6(1) = 30 g/mol
24 g/mol / 30 g/mol x 100=80%

Determine the number of g/mol of your whole chemical equation. Then divide the number of g/mol of one of the substances by the total chemical equation and multiply it by 100.
